Summary

Join us for part three of the 2009 Design-Build Web Seminar series. In previous sessions this year and last, we've focused on architect-led design-build.  In reality, the majority of design-build projects in the US are contractor-led.  This session explores how an architect can be an effective partner in a contractor-led entity, and how the architect can turn this experience into a learning opportunity, better equipping the architectural firm to take the lead on subsequent projects.

About the Speakers

Betsy Downs, AIA
Betsy Downs is a Principal at OWP/P, a full service architectural and engineering firm with offices in Chicago and Phoenix.  She is President of OWP/Ps' design/build company, a solely owned subsidiary of OWP/P Inc.  By teaming with her Contractor partners, Betsy guides designer-led design/build efforts, offering a single source of responsibility for design and construction. With almost 40 years of experience, Betsy knows how to establish a successful team, facilitate collaboration and manage a project in the most timely and effective manner possible.

Betsy is a member of the AIA Design/Build Knowledge Community National Advisory Group, providing national leadership in the field of architect-led design/build. She is past president of the Design Build Institute of America (DBIA) Great Lakes Chapter and remains active in the DBIA.  She has served on DBIA national awards juries in 2005, 2006 and 2007.

Carlos J. Cardoso, AIA, Associate Partner, Beyer Blinder Belle
Mr. Cardoso's work experience has emphasized construction administration and project management. In his role as Director of Construction Administration, he coordinates all of Beyer Blinder Belle's construction activities. To support his efforts, he has composed a team of field architects with diverse experience in construction management, technical construction expertise, and hands-on field experience on the construction site. Mr. Cardoso is currently working with the firm's Washington, DC office on Rosslyn Central Place, a mixed-use development whose two towers will be the tallest in the Washington metropolitan area. The project has been recognized by the Washington Smart Growth Alliance for exemplifying smart growth characteristics, and is targeted for LEED certification. Other notable projects he has worked on for cultural, institutional, and commercial clients include the Natick Collection, the renovation and expansion of a high-end shopping center in Natick, MA, and the Columbia University School and Faculty Housing, a new 12-story mixed-use building on the University's Manhattan campus.

Mr. Cardoso implemented the addition of a Design-Build Division within Beyer Blinder Belle in the belief that this alternate delivery method is beneficial for certain clients and projects. He considers it to be an important tool to teach young architects about collaboration among all members of a team, and this philosophy has led to many successful project completions. Mr. Cardoso is a member of the advisory council for the Dean of Architecture at the City College of New York and is a licensed architect in New York and New Jersey. Mr. Cardoso was recently nominated to the AIA Design Build Knowledge Community-Advisory Group, where he will serve a 5-year term beginning in 2009. He is a graduate of the City College of New York (B.Arch.).
