Dr. Dawn Jackson, DrPH, RHIA, CCS-P, FAHIMA, is a full professor and program director for the undergraduate Health Services Administration Program at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, KY. She holds a bachelor's degree in Health Information Management, a master's degree in Allied Health Education, a doctoral degree in Health Services Man┬Čagement, and most recently attained fellowship status with the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Dr. Jackson's areas of expertise include healthcare reimbursement systems, coding and billing processes, medical law and health care management. She is a certified coding specialist and has been presenting coding courses for AAOMS for over 15 years.

Summary

Synopsis:  Participants will learn about the impact of ICD-10-CM on OMS practices, including the need for in-depth physician documentation in order to appropriately report the increased specificity available in ICD-10-CM coding. In addition, this webinar will examine how ICD-10-CM will require coders to have increased knowledge of medical terminology and pathophysiology. 
 
Objectives:
  • Describe the relationship between documentation in the health record and ICD-10-CM clinical coding assignment. 
  • Identify strategies to improve clinical documentation needed in the assignment of ICD-10-CM codes.
  • Identify training needs among coding professionals that will facilitate accurate assignment of ICD-10-CM codes.
