In the particular context of searching students' rooms, finding the right balance requires not only a firm grounding in the institution's policies and procedures, but also a working knowledge of the essential legal principles governing when, how and by whom a student's room may be searched. Join us as we review the 4th amendment and other legal constraints that govern both public and private institutions; the central importance of institutional policy, practice and philosophy; and practical suggestions that you can utilize within your staff and campus community. Instructors: Daryl J. Lapp, partner, Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge LLP Daryl chairs the Educational Institutions Practice Group of Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge LLP. He regularly advises and represents colleges, universities and independent schools on a wide range of student affairs, employment, and other matters. He holds a B.A. (1984) from Swarthmore College and a J.D. cum laude from Northwestern University School of Law (1987). Steve Janosik, Ed.D., Assoc. Professor, Educational Leadership & Policy Studies, Virginia Tech Steve Janosik is the program coordinator for the Higher Education program and the Director of the Educational Policy Institute at Virginia Tech. He received his B.S degree (1973) in Business Administration from Virginia Tech, M.A. degree (1975) in counseling and student personnel services from the University of Georgia, and Ed. D. degree (1987) in Educational Administration from Virginia Tech. Dr. Janosik has more than 20 years of experience in college administration and writes frequently on the topics of higher education law and policy, liability and risk management.
