Summary

Pre-Requisites: Some previous research administration negotiation experience and a working knowledge of terms and conditions associated with various sponsored agreements (including industry contracts) are encouraged.

Negotiation is a learned skill - it takes time, practice and patience. Some relish the challenge more than others but good negotiation skills are an important part of the research administrator's professional portfolio and everyone can learn to do it. Our panel will provide ideas that will help you prepare for and conduct negotiations for sponsored research agreements with sponsors of all types but with particular attention to industry contracts.

We will discuss common areas of disagreements and practical substitute language, with concrete examples and positive alternatives to use in your negotiations for topics such as inventions, publications and data ownership. With a diverse panel possessing many years of negotiation experience this session will provide a wide range of ideas and solutions.

Learning Objectives
  • Participants will learn to develop acceptable alternative language for negotiations;
  • Participants will understand acceptable versus unacceptable contract language and the consequences of the unacceptable;
  • Participants will learn to focus on key issues which are important in negotiations;
